Brief

"Design and produce a viral animation in which you produce words where the type used empathises with the word’s meanings and explores graphical styles."

Brainstorming ideas

When we were set this brief, I was unsure of which direction I wanted to take it. I explored different songs with metaphors in them that I could create an animation from as well as looking at different quotes.

Design Process

After exploring different ideas of what to create, I decided on creating an animation of a rolling dice. I started to research into dice movements and came up with some sketches. I watched dice falling in slow motion on YouTube to understand how they spin as they fall and then studied the faces of the dice and which should be where. I decided on adding Rick Ashley's 'never gonna give you up' as the background music as the rick roll was a mass media trend in 2021, popping up everywhere as a way to prank your friends. This meant that I was able to bring it back as to create a viral animation which is short enough that you could turn it into a GIF to send round to your friends.

From this I was then able to follow a YouTube tutorial of how to create the dice on Adobe After effects. I had never used this software before and it took a while to understand how it works and how to add the dice's movements. Although I didn't choose any of the song lyrics to animate, I would like to attempt animating these over 2023 and am excited to see the outcomes of these.
