Who is Jet?

Hey there! I am Jet Gates (they/them), a designer & accessibility consultant who is on a mission to change the world!

Currently, I am working on completing my digital media degree at the University of Winchester. My goal has always been to wake up every day feeling excited: if I don't wake up like this, I know something needs to change.

Since a young age, I have always been passionate about business, marketing and design work. At age 7 I created my first business plan; a comprehensive lever arch folder of a complete business proposal for a company called “Purfect Pets”. This included everything from the branding, HR documents, floor plans, expansion plans, and the whole lot. Then at 14, I decided that I wanted to get a job. I started working at my local sports centre, which I thoroughly enjoyed but it lacked the creative outlook I craved.

I was fortunate enough to land my dream job as a marketing assistant with a company called Teens in AI, and this is where my accessibility consultancy journey started. Deciding which university to go to was hard until I looked around Winchester and instantly fell in love.

During my time here in Winchester, I have been working part-time with my university's student union, running the disabled students network and collaborating directly with the senior leadership team regarding on-campus accessibility. It has been so rewarding to watch my hard work make visible changes. We have had so much incredible feedback from members at Access and it has been beautiful watching people flourish during their time with us.

I have also recently joined the One Winchester scheme, helping the student union and university to ensure that they are being inclusive of marginalised groups. As part of my role here, I have taken on the lead for both the accessibility and disability groups and am looking forward to creating more change!

Some will say that I can't change the world, but what's stopping me?!
