"Design a piece of 'digital art' (static) based on a traditional artist e.g. William Blake, Samuel Palmer, Salvador Dali,
or a modern digital designer/illustrator e.g. David Carson, Neville Brody or Vaughan Oliver".
For my piece I chose David Milan, a 3D artist and designer who focuses on lettering and typography. His work is so vibrant and combines photography with the traditional art of calligraphy.
After looking through David's work, I searched through my photography work to find a good image to use. I found two images that I thought would be fitting- one of my friend Helen, where I would add her full name in calligraphy or my friend Nouran who is a Syrian refugee. For Nouran's piece I would have added "justice fighter" in calligraphy with electricity symbols and peace signs.
However once I came up with the sketches as seen above, I decided that I prefered the design of Helen and thought it was more fitting with the style of David's work. From there I jumped onto Procreate and started to edit the image.
The first step of the process was to remove the background of the image and then from here I was able to add the doodles and the text that you can see. In terms of the colour scheme I knew that I wanted to use colours that can be seen on Helen's jumper which included the bight red used for the cont, the yellow which can be seen in the doodles and then the blue of her jumper. This colour scheme also matches David's work where he primarily uses primary colours on his illustration to make them instantly eye catching. Above you can see a timelapse of my creation of the piece.
Overall, I am really happy with how it turned out. I was trying a brand new style and really enjoyed getting creative with it. If I was to do it again, I would set up a photoshoot to capture images that fit the style better.
